Try Pet Selector Looking for adoptable pets? What it does
Choosing a dog or cat breed is one of the most consequential decisions a future pet owner makes. The wrong match leads to frustration on both sides — high-energy working breeds in small apartments, low-tolerance breeds in active families, heavy shedders in allergy households. Pet Selector helps you avoid those mismatches before you commit.
You describe your lifestyle, home, and preferences. PawNexus matches that against a curated breed manifest and returns ranked breed recommendations with explanations of why each one fits.
What we ask about
- Dwelling: apartment, house, yard size
- Lifestyle: activity level, hours away from home, presence of children or other pets
- Energy preference: couch buddy, moderate, very active
- Grooming commitment: low maintenance, willing to brush weekly, OK with regular professional grooming
- Size preference: toy, small, medium, large, giant
- Budget: monthly care budget including food, grooming, vet
- Special needs: hypoallergenic, low-shedding, good with cats, good with kids, novice-owner friendly
How recommendations are scored
Pet Selector uses positive affinity scoring — breeds gain points for matching your preferences, not just losing points for missing them. The result is ranked recommendations where the top matches genuinely fit your stated lifestyle. PawNexus surfaces all breeds with at least 90% match (minimum five recommendations) so you have real options to evaluate.
Mixed breeds are handled explicitly. If you tell PawNexus you're considering a mix, the advisor reasons over the primary breed's traits while flagging that mixed dogs vary.
What you get back
For each recommended breed, Pet Selector returns:
- Compatibility score and the dimensions it scored highest on
- Energy, grooming, size, and temperament summary
- Known breed-specific health considerations
- Realistic monthly care cost estimates
- Optional handoff to Insurance Advisor if you want to price coverage for that breed
